SESSION 1 SUMMARY
"The Dreams of Brindlewatch"
In the mist-shrouded realm of Aeltheryn, two seasoned wanderers answered a discreet summons sealed in violet wax.
Drake Grimstone, pact-bound warrior of the Raven Queen — soldier, judge, and reluctant theologian of death’s natural order — traveled beside Vensyl Phynn, an aberrant-touched sorcerer whose mind brushed comfortably against truths most mortals were never meant to perceive.
Both were called to the isolated town of Brindlewatch, where, according to Lady Miravel Thorne, sleep itself had gone wrong.
THE SILENT TOWN
Upon arrival, Brindlewatch stood open yet lifeless. No guards watched the gates. No smoke rose from chimneys. A psychic pressure lingered at the town’s threshold — a dreamlike membrane separating waking reality from something deeper.
Crossing inside revealed the truth:
The townsfolk had surrendered their dreams.
Months earlier, famine, plague, and shared nightmares had driven Brindlewatch toward collapse. In desperation, the people accepted relief offered by a nascent psychic intelligence — an egregore, born not from invasion but from collective suffering itself.
This being, later known as the Keeper, held the dreams of the town so its people no longer needed to endure fear or grief.
But dreams do not disappear.
They accumulate.
What began as mercy became containment. The Keeper swelled with unprocessed pain until the entire town existed in suspended emotional stasis — safe, but slowly approaching catastrophic psychic rupture.
CONFRONTATION WITHOUT STEEL
Rather than destroy the entity or sever the bond — actions that risked killing hundreds — Drake and Vensyl chose discourse over violence.
Drake invoked a philosophy, and the Raven Queen:
Life, death, pain, and dreaming must remain part of the natural cycle.
Vensyl entered direct psychic communion with the Keeper, uncovering the truth of its origin and limitations.
Through persuasion, empathy, and moral judgment rather than combat, the pair guided both town and entity toward a new understanding:
"A hoarded burden rots. A shared burden is sacred." - Drake Grimstone, as received from the Raven Queen.
THE COVENANT OF BRINDLEWATCH
A new structure was forged.
Instead of surrendering all dreams, the people would share suffering among themselves first — community bearing community — while the Keeper would absorb only what exceeded mortal endurance.
Dreams would return.
Pain would return.
But never again alone.
With Vensyl serving briefly as willing vessel, the Keeper addressed the awakened townsfolk directly. Consent was given freely, and the psychic network reshaped itself into a balanced covenant between people and protector.
The oppressive dream-mass diminished into a stable presence above the town — no longer jailer, but guardian.
Brindlewatch awakened.
No battle was fought.
A disaster equivalent to the fall of an entire settlement was prevented.
AFTERMATH
By morning, the first Shared Burden Ritual succeeded. Grief was released gradually, safely redistributed between neighbors and Keeper alike. The town began healing — honestly this time.
Seeking the architect behind the original summons, Drake and Vensyl met Lady Miravel Thorne, a composed noblewoman whose agents had managed to send word beyond the sealed town.
Payment was rendered as promised.
But more importantly, Lady Thorne revealed troubling knowledge:
“There are other places where things born of desperation are growing teeth.”
Recognizing the rare skill required to resolve supernatural crises without bloodshed, she extended an informal offer.
There are phenomena emerging across Aeltheryn — entities, bargains, and living miracles born from mortal fear.
And she believes Drake Grimstone and Vensyl Phynn may be uniquely suited to confront them.
NEXT SESSION
Lady Miravel Thorne now seeks the pair’s continued aid investigating similar manifestations elsewhere — places where desperation has created powers neither wholly monstrous nor safely divine.
Negotiators.
Judges.
Problem-solvers standing between humanity and the consequences of its own suffering.
Your next journey begins with a question:
What happens when the next miracle refuses to listen?
