Fate VS. Free Will
I dance to music I cannot hear, my feet move to a ballet I do not know. I move in rhythm, my body seems to know where to go and I let it.
The ritual, while new to me, seems ancient in its construction and archaic in its form. I trace lines I do not understand. A spirit has taken over my will, my body moves to some unknown force. I feel like a lifeless puppet animated by a master without consent.
I am unsure why these spirits have selected me for this sport. It used to be both flattering and quizzical to ponder the intricacies of such a unique placement upon the stage. As the act comes to completion I realize it is no more than a fluke of nature, a genetic oddity and circumstance that places me on that mark.
The duration of the ritual defies time and space both. It can last mere seconds or many millennia depending on the observer. It can occur on Earth or somewhere in Andromeda. It seems unimportant now as all I can do is move to the beat of the metronome in my soul.
My lifeless body completes the movements it was destined to do, and my over-dosed consciousness lets the spirts do their dance. I dervish and trace pointed circle with cropped blade and as I reach apex my mind clears and the fog dissipates. The demons gasp at this unplanned pause in ceremony.
In my moment of clarity I question the sense of it all, and the point of my free will if I am an unwilling participant in events. I wonder how much autonomy I can exercise in a situation where the forces of the universe push against me. It seems pointless and hopeless to push back against such mountainous forces.
A quiet and familial voice whispers in my now still mind, “You are not alone!” This ray of light in a dark place offers me a little hope as there have always been guides and help on my path. I search my mind for this unseen help. My first instinct is to turn to God. I say a prayer for guidance and support.
The only reply I receive is, “All is as it should be.” Answers like that used to comfort me, but now it leaves me wondering. Next I turn to the immortals and as I stare at the sky they seem unmoved by my predicament as if the events have played out since time immemorial and they are powerless to change them.
The last thing I can think of are my mortal friends. Those friends I have made along the way, those who have sworn no oaths yet have journeyed with me. These days they are mostly unseen friends, and it is those that I need most. I will soon succumb to the spell that compels my dance and before my final step I would ask you to act in accordance with the will of the universe and make sure the conclusion is the one desired by the majority of consciousness.
